Guys, since flying with a joypad is great in Armed Assault, but appalling in FG I've just bought an X52 on ebay. I hope that it wasn't a silly purchase in retrospect. Should perhaps have asked first.

Good choice, can't go wrong with Saitek. The X45 was WAY better than the 52 but sadly they don't make that anymore, the X52 is about the best you can get without spending stupid money. Let us know how you get on with it.

Oh wow - bidding now!! My joystick is borrowed, and a bit worn out, and I've wanted a separate throttle for ages!!

anyone who gets the X45 will be very pleased, purely because its rubber and metal rather then rubber and plastic which the X52 is, although the 52 is probably more advanced.
For precise flying the X series are tops.

By the way, I think I'm right in saying that whilst most joysticks will plug straight into MSFS and work, you might have to do a bit of fiddling with FG to get the stick to do exactly what you want. However, I think there's enough expertise in FGUK to do this without too much fuss, and we can always make custom configs available on our server...

Yeah its easy to get them to work, there's a joystick configuration tool. Plug the joystick in, run the tool and then run flightgear.
Its worked for all mine anyway!

Yep, that will get your basic controls set up, however if you want to do anything a bit more specialised - including, IIRC, Press To Talk for FGCom - you have to tweak the XML file. It's not difficult or time consuming, and well worth it for that personal touch.

I have to admit it took some messing about for me to get my Thrustmaster Hotas x to run on FG but got there in the end. This js and throttle isn't too bad but does have a nasty dead spot in the centre, both laterally AND in the twist (rudder) motion, which makes life a little awkward. especially in helicopters.
